This site is off the beaten path, and consists of a short loop trail with interpretive stops, a small pavilion for picnics or contemplation, and a bathroom.
This historic site interprets the events of the Battle of Island Mound, which is important as it represents one of the first combat operations for Union colored troops in the Civil War.
It is long overdue to give thanks and credit to those of whom it is due.
Delightful. A forgotten skirmish of the Civil War where former slaves fought like the men were and in the hearts of their fellow citizens. Outnumbered by rebel bushwhackers the would not retreat and fought hand to hand with bayonets and rifle butts.
Historically significant site where first time black soldiers engaged in battle during Civil War. Interesting. Nice picnic area.
Still not fully developed but the start of a legacy of bravery in the struggle to freedom of One Nation Under God.
My family ventured here, thinking it would be a fun day trip, boy were we wrong... We were walking peacefully through the park when, out of nowhere a crazy naked man burst from the woods wielding a sharpened flagpole with the Confederate flag. He stabbed my dog, and then bit my dad in the neck. Luckily, I had decided to take my 80mm Howitzer on the walk, so I used that to blow him to pieces. It was an unpleasant day, to say the least.
This is a very nice place to picnic with your family. Bring something for the kids to do though, there's no playground equipment.
